One thing I would add to this lesson next time is to pause about half way through the lesson and allow students to go observe and talk with other groups. I might possibly give each student a question to ask another group in this time to facilitate conversation. I think an activity like this would encourage peer review and make some learning concrete for students.
Here is a picture of one of the products from our Grade 3 Science lesson today. My grade 3 class was expected to construct a balanced animal using a variety of materials. Students were able to experiment with different designs and different materials. At the end of the lesson students were able to present their animals explaining reasons for their design and choice of materials. This allowed students to make connections between the appropriate designs and materials. Students were able to see why some legs of animals are placed differently than others based on body design. Students understood that leg positioning, addition of a tail, size of head, etc affects balance.
