We have started to begin practicing our teaching skills and presenting out own lessons. Also, this week we have discussed many more KSA elements. I am choosing to talk about the classroom environment and classroom management in this blog post. As we start conducting lessons I am finding the examples I am learning from professors and other students are so helpful. It might seem silly to directly write in your lesson plan the exact attention grabber you are planning on using at what time but for a pre-service teacher don't you think it makes perfect sense? You do not want to be caught with a loud and rowdy Grade 4 class in the gymnasium with no clue how to get there attention but to yell. There are so many attention grabbing strategies that can be used but it is important to recognize which work best with what age, class or activity. Here is a small list of some attention grabbing techniques we have discussed.
1.) Rhythmic Clapping
2.) 10-1 count down
3.) Silent raised Hand
4.) Hush goes the crowd
5.) Quiet coyote
As pre service teachers I think it is important to have these prepared with your lesson so that you do not have to think on your feet and risk using an inappropriate strategy because it was the first one to come to mind. Also, I think it is as pre-service teachers great that we are implementing these in our lessons and practicing them on our peers. It is extremely important to maintain an organized, controlled classroom because that makes a safe environment. Students need a safe and organized environment to learn in. For younger children it would likely be a good idea to practice these types of strategies several times before using them so that they know what to do. These strategies will likely be more effective that way. It might also be fun and engaging to collaboratively make up an attention grabbing strategy with your students. The students then would feel engaged and a part of the process likely making the strategy more meaningful. As I begin lesson planning and teaching I plan to use these at any time needed and I am always looking for more ideas and suggestions!
