Philosophy of Education
As a teacher I believe it is my job to foster a desire in students to become and remain continuous learners by setting expectations, providing the knowledge, skills and attitudes for students to take ownership for their own learning. I think it is extremely important for me to be a life-long learner in the aspects of my life if I am going to hold my students to those expectations.
Effective teaching should foster an environment that makes learning meaningful and relevant to the real world. Students should be given opportunities to make their own connections and their own meaning of the discoveries they make. I believe effective teaching involves active engagement of the students, relevancy to the real world and the teacher acting as a facilitator or guide by asking meaningful questions. An effective teacher is committed to understanding the disciplines we teach so that they can guide students to make their own connections and understand their own discoveries because these are life long learning habits. Through facilitation and inquiry student learning students should learn how to think and make sense of their own learning. My goal is to mold students who are critical thinkers and contributing members of society.
An effective teacher is a constant researcher, one who is always reflecting on situations and strategies.
A sense of community fosters a safe environment for students as well. The feeling of community and a safe relationship is built between a student and teacher through trust. For students to engage in learning they must take some necessary risks and as a teacher it is our job to prepare students and provide them with an environment that allows them to take those risks. I will adopt a community of collaboration built on strong relationships. Students will feel respected, comfortable and ready to learn with their peers.
I believe that the role of continual assessment is important for learning. Assessment for learning is important because it allows the chance to give descriptive feedback throughout the learning process before evaluation occurs allowing for improvement. I believe descriptive feedback is more beneficial than evaluative feedback in the learning process for students. I believe student involvement is important in assessment as it creates more student ownership and involvement which increases the learning process. Students are required to think about their learning and evaluate their understanding when they are involved in assessment, which I believe to be another benefit to student involvement.
My philosophy of education will undoubtedly evolve throughout my experiences in the Faculty of Education and my professional semesters. It will also continue to be shaped throughout this challenging and worthwhile career ahead of me.
